Bronny James experienced a cardiac arrest while participating in a basketball training session at the University of Southern California last month, attributed to a congenital heart anomaly, as stated by a spokesperson for the family.
The incident occurred on July 24 and involved the 18-year-old son of Los Angeles Lakers’ iconic player LeBron James. Following the incident, Bronny was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and subsequently received medical attention from specialists at the Mayo Clinic and Atlantic Health-Morristown Medical Center in New Jersey.
In an announcement made on Friday, Stephanie Rosa from the LeBron James Family Foundation disclosed that the underlying cause of James’ unexpected cardiac arrest has been identified.
“It is an anatomically and functionally significant Congenital Heart Defect which can and will be treated,” the statement said. “We are very confident in Bronny’s full recovery and return to basketball in the very near future.”
Following the incident at USC’s Galen Center, the younger James was discharged from Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles merely three days later. On the subsequent evening, he enjoyed a family dinner outing in Santa Monica.
Bronny, whose full name is LeBron James Jr., solidified his commitment to USC in May after emerging as one of the nation’s top prospects from Sierra Canyon School in nearby Chatsworth.
Despite this, James did not accompany the Trojans on their European tour this month.
Remarkably, Bronny James marked the second high-profile USC basketball recruit to encounter cardiac arrest within the past year. Vincent Iwuchuwku also faced a similar situation during a workout last July. However, the 7-foot-1 center made an inspiring recovery, returning to the court six months later and eventually participating in 14 games for the Trojans as a freshman.
