For more than a year, Tom Holland has been committed to living a sober life, although it hasn’t been a straightforward path.
In a recent episode of the On Purpose With Jay Shetty podcast, the Spider-Man: No Way Home actor revealed that he began contemplating the notion of battling alcohol addiction after experiencing an excessively indulgent Christmas celebration. This realization prompted him to undertake a dry January in 2022 as an initial step towards addressing his relationship with alcohol.
Tom Holland recalled, “All I could think about was having a drink. It really scared me. I just was like, ‘Wow, maybe I have a little bit of an alcohol thing.’”
Tom Holland’s moment of clarity served as motivation for him to extend his dry journey for an additional month. The 27-year-old actor shared that reaching the two-month milestone would serve as evidence that he didn’t have an issue with drinking. However, this endeavor proved to be challenging due to the prevalent drinking culture in England.
Undeterred, he continued, “I felt like I couldn’t be social. I felt like I couldn’t go to the pub and have a lime soda. I couldn’t go out for dinner. I was really, really struggling. I started to really worry that maybe I had an alcohol problem.”
Tom Holland, who coincidentally is in a relationship with Zendaya from Euphoria, made the decision to extend his period of abstaining from alcohol by an additional six months. The actor felt that he had reached a significant turning point and was optimistic about maintaining his sobriety, aiming to celebrate his birthday in June with confidence.
Having now surpassed a year and a half of sobriety, Holland expressed that he is currently experiencing the utmost happiness in his life. He further mentioned, “I’m happy to say it — I was definitely addicted to alcohol. I’m not shying away from that at all.”
