Straw by Tyler Perry: A Powerful, Must-Watch Film with a Heartfelt Message

I just finished watching Straw, and I truly believe this is one of Tyler Perry’s most heartfelt and meaningful projects to date. If you haven’t seen it yet stop everything, log into Netflix, and press play. It’s worth every second.

Taraji P. Henson completely pulls you in from the beginning. Her portrayal of Janiyah, a single mother pushed to the brink, is raw, powerful, and deeply emotional. You feel her pain, her desperation, and her strength in every scene. She delivered something real something many Black women can relate to but often feel unseen in.

What struck me most is how this film highlights mental health in a way that doesn’t shame, but gives space. It’s a reminder that people are carrying more than we know, and sometimes the strongest among us are the ones silently breaking. Perry does a beautiful job telling a story that’s layered with compassion, honesty, and humanity.

Sherri Shepherd and Teyana Taylor also gave standout performances, and seeing Sinbad return to acting was touching in the best way. Every actor brought their heart to this film and it shows.

Now, I’ll be honest I do wish the ending had gone in a different direction. But even with that, it doesn’t take away from the impact or beauty of the story. It was so well done, so necessary, and I have nothing but praise for what this film represents and the conversations it opens up.

Straw reminded me that healing doesn’t always come in neat packages, and sometimes the cry for help is quiet until it becomes a roar.

So from The Veleka B Project to you—this film is a must-watch. Let it sit with you. Let it speak to you. Then check in on your loved ones and remember: grace, compassion, and presence go a long way.
